With spring right around the corner, my mind wanders to farmer’s markets, fresh fruit and vegetables. But being a Drunkard, I’m thinking of what mixes best with what, to make a refreshing cocktail that goes well with the season, as well as being refreshing after having worked outside (or inside) on the spring clean-up “honey-do” list. In comes the Pimm’s Cup and fruity goodness.
While I do enjoy more traditional spring drinks, like a mojito or julep, I like to mix it up and keep people guessing. The Pimm’s Cup provides the necessary refreshing qualities you look for in a spring drink, while providing you the ability to expand your horizons and give your guests something they’ve likely never tried (at least in the US, where Pimm’s isn’t quite as popular). The other thing I really like about it is that you can really just throw in whatever fruit you like. Pimm’s is strong enough to not be over powered by many fruits, so go nuts. I threw orange, strawberry, and lemon into mine, just as the garnish. I would be careful if you’re juicing the fruit, since that can really throw off the flavor.
2oz Pimm’s No. 1
3oz Ginger Beer
1 slice cucumber
4-6 mint leaves
Fruit to garnish
Muddle the cucumber and mint at the bottom of the glass. Add ice and top with Pimm’s and ginger beer (feel free to use 7-up, Sprite, or Ginger Ale as well). Stir with bar spoon and top with fruit
Mrs. Drunkard absolutely loved this drink. It put her in the mood to sit outside and just enjoy the Midwest sun for a bit. It really just gets you thinking about spring and nice weather, all the while being refreshing. I think next time, I’m going to try this with Pimm’s Blackberry and Elderflower flavor, just to see how that goes over.
